    OBITUARY:
Lucy Cabot Smethurst January 26 1934 -July 27 2018 Lucy Cabot Smethurst, of Atlanta Georgia, passed peacefully with her family at her side July 27 2018. Born in Boston Mass, daughter of Powell and Virginia Cabot, Lucy attended Miss Porters school in Farmington Mass, and then Wheaton College and finally Radcliffe where she completed her University studies with an MBA. Lucy Codman Cabot married Wood Smethurst of Raleigh North Carolina and the couple moved to Atlanta Ga in 1962. Sons Frank and William joined the Smethurst family in 1964 and 1967 respectively. Marveling in the wildlands and botanical treasures of Georgia, Lucy soon became concerned for the preservation of Georgia’s wild places, and following her heart, she soon became an early member of Friends of the River and the Georgia Conservancy. Soon Lucy was working with legislators on specific conservation measures and ultimately Lucy became the first female chairwoman of the Georgia Conservancy. Lead positions with the Georgia Division of Natural Resources, Leadership Atlanta, and the Georgia Clean Air Campaign all followed. Though Lucy chose Atlanta over all other places to live, she also maintained strong ties with her family. Returning to Boston, and particularly Maine to see her brothers, cousins, nephews and nieces was a favorite pastime. Lucy was also an artist throughout her life. She painted primarily in Watercolor and she took great pleasure in painting natural land and seascapes, and she also loved to teach others to paint. Lucy was always very adventurous and a world traveler. She visited Europe, Ecuador, Mexico, Costa Rica, The Galapagos, and the Canadian Maritime Provinces after she retired. She also cruised the Mediterranean and Inside passage of Alaska with her terrific friend and companion, Gene Price. Lucy is survived by her sons Frank and William Smethurst, Daughters in Law Carol and Shannon Smethurst and their daughters Mallory, Alaina and Emma. There will be a celebration of the life of Lucy Smethurst at 6pm September 14 at the Chattahoochee Nature Center 9135 Willeo Rd, Roswell Ga 30076. In Lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in the form of joining the Georgia Conservancy or picking up trash on the Chattahoochee River. Preferably both.
