OBITUARY: Mary Carole Stephens
March 5, 1933 – May 28, 2012
Mary Carole Stephens of Chamblee, Georgia, went to be with the Lord on Monday, May 28, 2012. Her year long struggle of recovery from a stroke ended on Memorial Day, in her own home, surrounded by her loving family.
Carole was born on March 5, 1933 in Akron, Ohio. She was a graduate of St. Vincent’s High School and Ursuline College. After graduating from Ursuline, Carole shared her love of language and reading with her students as a high school English teacher, and after her children were born, she retired from teaching to devote herself entirely to raising her family.
In the mid-70’s, Carole returned to the workforce and joined Days Inns of America. After a 10-year career with Days Inns prior to their move from Atlanta, she joined U.S. Sprint Corporation. For the last 25 years, Carole was an account executive with the firm, handling national business accounts. She loved her job, and amazed her family and friends with her ability to master the quickly-changing technology that characterized her career with Sprint. Her much younger co-workers became her close friends, and appreciated her wisdom, patience and business acumen.
Carole’s many friends will remember her positive attitude, gentle manner and gracious, giving heart. But most of all they will remember her joyful devotion to her children, her grandchildren and their friends – and all that interested them. Carole was a selfless person, who opened her heart and home to all in need, without judgment. She was a patient listener who many sought out as a confidant. She passed on her voracious reading habit, her love of learning and her quick wit and sense of humor to all of her children and grandchildren, along with her love of sports, particularly her Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets and the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. Carole also loved to sew, crochet and garden, and passed many of those talents along to her children.
Carole is the beloved mother of Jim, Mary Kay (and Mark Woodworth), Mark (and Patti), Peter and Anne Stephens; and grandmother to Harry, Will, Sam and Savannah Woodworth and Joseph Stephens. She was preceded in death by her parents, Katherine and Peter Bell, and her sister, Patricia Ann Nolte.
Please join her family in celebrating an exceptional life. The Mass of the Resurrection will be held on Thursday, May 31 at 3:00 pm at Our Lady of the Assumption Catholic Church, with a reception to follow in Moylan Hall. Visitation will be Wednesday, May 30th from 6-8 pm at Fischer Funeral Care, and the family will greet friends at the church at 2:00 pm Thursday, prior to the Mass. Interment will occur at a later date.
The family requests that donations be made in Carole’s name to her favorite charities, the Luke Project (lukeproject.org) or the St. Vincent de Paul Society (Our Lady of the Assumption chapter). DeKalb Extension | | | Anne and Cliff Burgess | May 30 2012 12:22 pm | | Carole was an amazing lady who lived life the way she wanted to, making a significant impact on many people. We are thinking of the family as you struggle with the grief associated with Carole's death. | | | Mike Scheper | May 30 2012 08:45 am | | I only wish I would have had the opportunity to have known her better. As Patti Stephen's brother, my time with Carol was short. I did hear wonderful things about her from my sister, my brother-in-law, their son Joseph and other family members. May she rest in peace. | | | Rich "Richie" Simons | May 30 2012 07:35 am | | I grew up with Jim in Chamblee. I think we were the two geekiest kids in the neighborhood. We hung out at 3651 Fortingale and Carole was simply "Mom". She was the best and we expected it. But now I know that character doesn't just happen. Carole was all about others. Her family was second only to her faith. I was fortunate to be considered "one of the boys". They say you should strive to be the person your dog thinks you are. If I could be half the person Carole was I will have done well. Mom, when we meet again in the Lord's house, could you maybe have a sandwich and some cookies for me? | | | Patrizia & Piera Casacchia | May 30 2012 07:09 am | | Glad I had the chance to meet her... We wish we could be phisically there as part of the family...but we are, with our hearts.
Love
Patrizia and Piera | | | Martha and Slade Barker | May 29 2012 11:28 pm | | We extend our sympathies to you in your loss. Jim has spoken of his Mom with great love and respect. I will be praying for you and thanking God for the time I spent with her over the many years. I'm sorry I won't be in town for the funeral but know I am with you in spirit. Love you. | | | The Kerver Family | May 29 2012 03:40 pm | | Our sincerest condolences to the Stephens and Woodworth families on Mrs. Stephens' passing. Friend and "second Mom" to many, including Keith. Will always admire her kindness, warmth, sincerity, and strength. May you all share the good memories with each other, along with the comfort of friends and family at this time. God bless you all, and may He give you comfort, as we trust He has done with your Mom. | |
